| The health system of Manicore Municipality, located in the poorest Amazon Region in Brazil, is struggling with chronic shortage of financial and human resources. There is an urgent need to build the capacity of community health workers. HANDS has been supporting this area since 2001. In 2002, HANDS carried out various activities, including training of community health workers on safe water and HIV/AIDS prevention. |
| Ms. Shibeila, speaking to school children in Manicore. The seminar emphasized the provision of accurate knowledge on HIV/AIDS and elimination of discrimination. |
| In addition to the above activities, HANDS conducted group interviews targeting the community health workers to explore the current situation of health systems in Manicore. Based on the data, HANDS will continue to expand activities to improve the health system in Manicore. |

Afghanistan |
| Twenty-three years of war compounded by events occurring after post-September 11th and the fall of the Taliban rule has brought Afghanistan's national systems to an utter destruction. Further, the health system has affected enormously because of the impact it has on the lives of the people. In light of this, reconstructing the national health system has been one of main pillars and priority for the government of Afghanistan. |

In 2002, HANDS helped to conduct the National Health Resource Survey in collaboration with the Ministry of Health of Afghanistan. HANDS assisted to mobilize 167 Afghan to survey over 1,000 health facilities as part of the Afghanistan National Health Sector revitalization plan. This survey helped to collect essential data which were previously unknown about the health sector of Afghanistan such as the number and condition of health facilities, equipment and human resources. The report of this survey can be found on the Promotion and Publication section of this website.
Utilizing the information gained from the National Health Resource Survey Afghanistan, HANDS has been collaborating with Management Sciences for Health (MSH) since June 2003 to implement the Rural Expansion of Afghanistan Community-based Health Care (REACH) Program for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). HANDS' role in Afghanistan ended in March 2005, however MSH continues to work on the REACH project. |
